01What it does

What Advocates for Africa Inc does

Mission

AFA is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children and their families in Rwanda and other African communities through education, compassionate care, and community support. We work to provide hope and sustainable opportunities by facilitating access to educational programs, family assistance, and holistic child development initiatives.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2025 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

We opened a brand new middle school to supplement and continue providing excellent education to our elementary students in Rwanda.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. During the year, Advocates for Africa continued advancing its charitable mission through child sponsorship and educational support programs. The organization provided tuition assistance, educational materials, academic instruction, counseling services, and spiritual mentorship to vulnerable children. Additional support included food assistance and other welfare services aimed at improving the overall quality of life and long-term development of participating children and families.

    $255,992 spent
    22% of program spending
  2. These expenses were related to the operation of Advocates School in Rwanda. The Advocates Christian Academy is a primary and middle school located in Bugesera (Ruhuha), Rwanda, established by Advocates for Africa to provide education and digital skill building in a rural, impoverished community.

    $839,534 spent
    71% of program spending
  3. Short-term mission trips are a huge part of our ministry. They create lasting value for both the communities being served and those who participate. They provide practical support through projects, education, medical care, and ministry while encouraging local churches and building meaningful relationships. At the same time, participants grow in their faith, develop a deeper understanding of different cultures, and return home with a renewed passion for serving others.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2022 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $10k → $20k.

4 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ADVOCATES FOR AFRICA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ADVOCATES FOR AFRICA INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 83%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ADVOCATES FOR AFRICA INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2022 100% · 2023 99% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of ADVOCATES FOR AFRICA INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $205 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Oklahoma, across 1 state.

TX

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $75k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
