01What it does

What Yuba Watershed Institute does

Mission

To promote the sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of long-term biological diversity in the Yuba River watershed.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Program: Forest Health. Planned and implemented forest health and hazardous fuels reduction projects across the Yuba River watershed, working with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Nevada County, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, and private landowners. In 2025 the Institute completed the 'Inimim Forest Restoration Project Phase 3 timber harvest and biomass treatment on roughly 250 acres of BLM land co-managed with YWI (SNC grant 1507), continued mastication and hand thinning on the 195-acre Little Deer Creek Landscape Resilience Project (SNC grant 1637), carried out hazardous fuels reduction, CEQA compliance and monitoring for the South Yuba Rim project under contract with Nevada County (funded by FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and SNC), and began planning for a shaded fuel break at Round Mountain. Work is performed by licensed contractors under YWI project management, with a Registered Professional Forester and environmental consultants. Expenses shown are the Forest Health program per the audited Statement of Functional Expenses; revenue is the grant and contract revenue earned for this program (SNC administrative-cost reimbursements of 81,542 are excluded).

  2. Program: Education. Public education on forest ecology, fungi, fire, and watershed stewardship. No public events were held in 2025 (the annual Fungus Foray did not take place) and no publications were released; staff began drafting new educational publications in late 2025 for release in a later year. Expenses consist of staff time on that drafting work and a U.S. Forest Service special-use permit fee. Sales of previously published works (66) are reported as inventory sales on Part VIII line 10.

Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $38k → $37.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 1% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of YUBA WATERSHED INSTITUTE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

YUBA WATERSHED INSTITUTE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 97% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. California out of state home

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $197 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
