01What it does

What Yangtze Repertory Theatre of America Inc does

Mission

Yangtze Repertory Theatre is an Obie-winning non-profit theater company that has been producing and presenting theatrical works by, for, and about the AAPI community for over 30 years. Founded in 1992 by Maryknoll Sister Joanna Chan, Yangtze Rep has been a home for artists whose works are not readily seen in the U.S. Since 2017, we have been focusing on supporting artists from the AAPI immigrant community through productions, residencies and commissions, and developing new works that shine a light on stories rarely told.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Our AAPI Artist Residency Project YZ celebrated the work of Cohort 4 artists, our senior class, through three distinctly different artistic endeavors. We traveled to 1940s' South Korea in the epic journey of Jesse Jae Hoon's The People's Committees; we followed 50-plus years of love and friendship in modern-day China in Jo Mei's documentary play Fallen Leaves; and finally, we gathered for Julia Gu's solo performance, Journey To The..., following an immigrant actor navigating her life in the United States. The program supported 34 artists, +80% AAPI.

  2. Part of our Commission program, we continued to support Marcus Yi's new musical, When the Fortune Cookie Crumbles during the 25-26 season. In September, we hosted another two-day workshop session working with six actors and a dramaturg to delve deeper into the story, dialogues and character development, followed by a February workshop focusing on the music and recording sessions. The program supported 22 artists.

  3. We presented an industry reading of Hua Mulan, a new musical by Jason Ma, at Pearl Studio. Inspired by the legendary 5th century Chinese folk heroine, and co-directed by Billy Bustamante and Chongren Fan, Hua Mulan features an ensemble cast of 14 led by Ali Ewoldt as Madam Hua and Maybe Happy Ending's Claire Kwon as Mulan. Positioned as an event for the community, the reading was by invite only and targeted at an audience that identifies as AAPI. More than 80 people attended the reading.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income rose $5k → $22k.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 60% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of YANGTZE REPERTORY THEATRE OF AMERICA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

YANGTZE REPERTORY THEATRE OF AMERICA INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 60% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund YANGTZE REPERTORY THEATRE OF AMERICA INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

60% of YANGTZE REPERTORY THEATRE OF AMERICA INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $15k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from New York funders.

New York out of state home

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $22k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
