01What it does

What Woodland Arboretum Foundation does

Mission

Woodland Arboretum Foundation is dedicated to meeting the public's need for natural recreation space, environmental education and assisting the cemetery with the selection, planting and care of arboriculture and horticultural features. The foundation also assists in providing a cultural workshop for volunteers interested in contributing to the natural beauty and value of dayton's urban environment, preservation of historical artifacts, and serving as an urban field station for institutions of higher education and geological study.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Post pandemic in 2021, woodland reinstituted in person educational events and tours to compliment virtual tours that were implemented in 2020 for the public. A total of 212 in person tours or presentations were conducted as well at the option for walking the grounds of the cemetery and doing a self-guided tour. Specific projects included a tree maintenance program to remove dead or failing trees, planting of new trees, placement of horticultural displays throughout the cemetery, and restoration and preservation of significant historic structures.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $616k → $5k.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 52% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of WOODLAND ARBORETUM FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

WOODLAND ARBORETUM FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 41% of grant income and the top three 74%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

73% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WOODLAND ARBORETUM FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

52% of WOODLAND ARBORETUM FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $523k that is directly attributable, 79% of it comes from Ohio funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $576k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
