What We Are the Culture Creators Nonprofit does
Mission
To provide high quality arts/entrepreneurship education for young men of color in the city of Detroit; with an emphasis on: professional development, strategic goal setting, aesthetics, and artistic integrity. All held in a space that reflects them and their culture.
As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.
Programs
On its FY2023 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.
Online Therapist We created an inclusive mental health space in the Culture House with full access to an online therapist. Over the years we have encountered youth with troubled backgrounds who desperately need and seek mental health treatment. We have found that creating safe spaces where youth can speak openly about their experiences has created a deeper sense of understanding and respect amongst peers along with a sense of comfort and acceptance. Self Care Retreat The practice of self care has become normalized but many fail to realize how this practice is actually a privilege that many underserved youth fail to experience. We instill that self care and rest. We introduced this habitually by creating retreats for our youth to physically practice such as nature and camping trips. These trips allowed our youth artists to create in refreshing and calm environments outside of the city. Library Expansion At We Are Culture Creators we have a library that sits 11 and we expanded our book collection to support self education and expanded learn,

We officially opened a new media center February 2023 led by one of our youth members Xavier Cuevas. This center will house a computer lab, small editing setup for video, sound lab and meeting space for young adults across Detroit. The main key to this new space will be the infinity wall we will be building. Currently the media house is in the final process of build out and we anticipate it to be complete by the end of 2024.
Youth Organizing Stipend We hired 2 youth at, $17,500 stipends each year. The youth organizers within our program organize and maintain our projects. These youth organizers are youth themselves between 18-24 which allows them to have direct influence on our projects.
Berlin International Music Exchange Program BETROIT We have commited to a 3 year International Music Exchange Program with the Nonprofit Gang Ways in Berlin, Germany {they work with hundreds at risk youth of color in Germany} which consists of a 10 youth artist exchange and music collaboration. This was our 3rd international exchange program within We Are Culture Creators. We had 3 Major Cultural Event Programs for the year of 2023 which we used 4k dedicated to curation. The 3 cultural events are Bloom on the Block a juneteenth Celebration, Cinco De Mayo and our Day of the Dead Gala Fundraising event.
The 3 programs described on its FY2023 Form 990, listed largest first by expense.
The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2019, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2019, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars.
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
5% of WE ARE THE CULTURE CREATORS NONPROFIT’s revenue is contributions — more earned-revenue than three-quarters of its peers (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 3 funders, grant income fell $49k → $46k.
2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 37% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of WE ARE THE CULTURE CREATORS NONPROFIT’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
WE ARE THE CULTURE CREATORS NONPROFIT leans on a few funders — its largest provides 34% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
83% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WE ARE THE CULTURE CREATORS NONPROFIT.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 80% · 2022 40% · 2023 55% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
WE ARE THE CULTURE CREATORS NONPROFIT draws 57% of its grant income from funders outside Michigan, across 3 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $110k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
