What Tucson Desert Art Museum Inc does
Mission
The preservation, acquisition, and exhibition of historic and contemporary southwestern art so that the public can appreciate and understand the heritage of the desert southwest and its surrounding areas. The museum will educate through displays, education programs, and group tours for children and adults.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Similar to other years, the museum opened two new exhibitions to the public curated by our staff and showing artifacts from our own collections and from the arizona historical society and other institutions with larger collections. We opened "gold fever: glory and greed in the western expansion years" which featured art, artifacts and history from the gold rush years. We also opened "colors to dye for: the mysterious world of navajo dye-making" which focuses on plant dye sources and their use to create the beautiful colors of navajo textiles.
$10,353 spent7% of program spendingThe museum's gallery and museum store has continued to help local artisans sell their products to both locals and the visitor market, while also supporting the programming and upkeep of the museum. The gallery and museum store primarily sell consigned works from local southwestern artists, which are packaged along with biographies of their accomplishments. We also host several workshops specifically in the gallery throughout the year for our guests to encourage learning and preservation of our great southwestern art and culture. In 2024 this included a gold jewelry making workshop, several artist talks, and several pottery demonstrations from a mata ortiz artisan.
$12,314 spent9% of program spendingSpecial public events included a "fun with gold" gold jewelry making workshop and a special "hip historian" talk with an arizona humanities scholar about the legends and lore of the gold rush and ghost towns in arizona. This exhibition had numerous sponsors including arizona humanities, long realty cares, and the cascade foundation.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $251k to $225k (−10%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
45% of TUCSON DESERT ART MUSEUM INC’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $500 → $24k.
2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 71% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of TUCSON DESERT ART MUSEUM INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
TUCSON DESERT ART MUSEUM INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 49% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
85% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund TUCSON DESERT ART MUSEUM INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2023 42% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
71% of TUCSON DESERT ART MUSEUM INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $13k that is directly attributable, 53% of it comes from funders outside Arizona, across 4 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $32k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
