01What it does

What Thoreau School Parent Teacher Group does

Mission

The Thoreau School Parent Teacher Group (ptg) works to enhance the educational, cultural, and social experience of all thoreau elementary school students. The ptg provides a forum for collaboration among parents, teachers, staff, and administrators, supports programs and activities that benefit students and families, and helps strengthen the connection between the school and the wider community. The organization promotes understanding of school policies and initiatives, fosters a positive school spirit through the thoreau c.a.r.e.s. Values, which stand for cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control, and serves as a liaison between the parent community and the school system.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Children's programs include a wide range of enrichment opportunities coordinated by the ptg's children's programming committee. Offerings include visiting authors, science and cultural assemblies, arts and music workshops, performances, and other hands-on experiences that extend classroom learning. Programs are designed to complement the academic curriculum and promote social, creative, and intellectual development. Each grade-level and special subject classroom (art, music, library, physical education, and spanish) receives a predetermined stipend each year. Support staff, including classroom aides, special education staff, and therapists, are also eligible for stipends to support their work with students. Stipends are intended for classroom supplies, instructional materials, and enhancements not provided by the school budget that directly benefit students. Staff submit reimbursement requests with supporting receipts or invoices to the ptg treasurer, who reviews each request for appropriateness and budget availability before issuing reimbursement.

  2. During fiscal year 2025, the ptg accepted contributions for a new playground at thoreau elementary school. The funds collected were transferred to the concord public schools district for a capital project benefitting the students. This construction project was a one-time event. Ptg itself did not create, nor does it hold, any assets, depreciable or otherwise, as the fund were transferred to the district for the restricted use of the construction of the playground.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $50 → $508.

5 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 95% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THOREAU SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER GROUP’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THOREAU SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER GROUP leans on a few funders — its largest provides 66% of grant income and the top three 90%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THOREAU SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER GROUP.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

95% of THOREAU SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER GROUP's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $12k that is directly attributable, 87% of it comes from Massachusetts funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $217k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
