01What it does

What The Unison Preservation Society Inc does

Mission

The unison historic preservation society was incorporated in 2001 to help maintain the historic character in and around unison. Through the society's efforts, unison was placed on the virginia landmarks register in 2002 and the national register of historic places in 2003.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Historic preservation and cultural appreciation: voiced concerns to loudoun county about the planned development of a farm in the unison area. In that regard, the unison preservation society hired attorneys to research land records and related legal criteria and engaged an engineering firm to monitorwells on adjacent properties that could be adversely impacted by t he project. The farm was not developed as the builder sold it to one of the adjacent property owners. Researched county easements on another unison-area farm that was purchased by a developer and monitored activities to ensure compliance with easement restrictions. Researched, obtained, and disseminated information regarding rural historic village designation for unison. Issued quarterly newsletters covering local cultural and agricultural topics. Promoted a sense of community through hosting activities at the historic unison general store including yoga classes, art instruction, and outdoor concerts. Upgraded and maintained the general store.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $250 → $7k.

1 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 28% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE UNISON PRESERVATION SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE UNISON PRESERVATION SOCIETY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 67% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

28% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE UNISON PRESERVATION SOCIETY INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 82% · 2022 100% · 2023 86% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $13k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
