What The Solution Lab Inc does
Mission
Provides hands-on and other educational and training opportunities for science-, technology-, clinical-, and business-oriented students, recent graduates, and scientists for careers in industry and entrepreneurship, with a focus on life-science, healthcare, and other science, technology, engineering, or mathematics ("stem")-related businesses.
As stated on its FY2023 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Training progam - selects the students, recent graduates and scientists who will participate in the program based on an individual's application or personal statement and an interview conducted by a member of the organization. The program then identifies businesses and nonprofits in the life-science, biotech, healthcare or other stem related industries that are willing to work with participants, and places its volunteers on interdisciplinary teams that will be best positioned to work on the issues presented by a particular business or nonprofit. The program prepares participating students, recent graduates and scientists for their 10-week session, and provides them with guidance, education and training. Throughout their involvement in the program, the program serves as a resource for participants, providing free mentorship and helping to resolve any issues that may arise during the course of the experience.
$23,262 spent100% of program spendingNetworking - to host some events geared towards its volunteers and other events that will be open to the general public. The program also hosts events in conjunction with local government agencies for a biotech incubator in new york city that showcases biotech entrepreneurship in action.
$0 spent0% of program spendingWorkshops - offers training workshops and seminars on professional development and career topics with interwoven themes of relevant life-science, healthcare and other stem related topics for our student, recent graduate and scientist volunteers as well as for the general public. These workshops, which are offered by our business mentors and are organized by the solution lab's board of directors and/or management or volunteers involved with the organization, include topics in entrepreneurship and the development of specific management consulting or project management skills. The purpose of this program is to broaden the skill sets of our volunteers, as well as the skills of interested members of the general public, and to introduce them to various careers in the health care and life science fields that may not be obvious to the general citizen.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $51k to $80k (+55%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
15% of THE SOLUTION LAB INC’s revenue is contributions — more earned-revenue than three-quarters of its peers (89% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 3 of the last 6 reported years ran a deficit.

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $5 → $59.
1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of THE SOLUTION LAB INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of THE SOLUTION LAB INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $148 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
