What The Half Fund does
Mission
The purpose of the corporation is to raise funds for projects which raise awareness and provide education regarding cancer detection, cancer treatments, and the impact of cancer on individual lives through the medium of film and video. The inception of The Half Fund is two-fold, and to be set up in two stages. The first stage is creating a narrative story for mass distribution in theaters, home video, and television. This narrative will be created with an estimated expense of $500,000. A further $250,000 will be required for prints and advertising, to bring this narrative to the marketplace. Such expenses will include, travel, public relations, and the fees for obtaining rights to screen the narrative in a national theater chain, thus creating interest in the narrative for further distribution to a wider audience. This initial sum of $750,000 will be obtained through a massive fund raising effort across the country, on radio, television, in print, and in live events. Program
In 2010, the primary achievements were to get the organization formed and apply for tax exempt status. The goal of raising $750,000 (to finance the creation of a narrative film that chronicles the struggle of a man in his late twenties who discovers that he has cancer) will be achieved in 2o14.
The program described on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.
The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2017 to 2018, from $27k to $20k (−26%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
100% of THE HALF FUND’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (78% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 8 of the last 9 reported years ran a deficit.
Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $13 → $29.
1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of THE HALF FUND’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of THE HALF FUND's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $73 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
