01What it does

What The Compass School Inc does

Mission

The compass school supports every student to find success in school, expand their horizons and develop as good students and good community members.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Middle and high school education designed to engage diverse learners with a wide range of educational experiences, personalized for different learning needs, with opportunities for student leadership so every student finds success in school and has the 21st century skills to contribute to their community.

  2. Health- we continue to expand our comprehensive approach to health and wellness. Our main financial need is the cost of our counselor and a special education assistant who supports students social-emotional needs and leads classes on mindfullness. These two staff also facilitate our wellness committee, which is a student led group that takes leadership for the health and well being of their peers, with particular attention to mental health issues. This group of volunteers puts students with their own health issues in the role of leaders who can take their challenges and use them to guide programming and supports to help all students.

  3. Special education: compass has a wrap around appoach to special education that supports students across all scholl programs, whether or not they have identified special needs. Compass is inclusive of a wide diversity of learners and has a personalized approach to education where every student can find success. In addition to direct special education supports, all aspects of the program are designed to proactively include all learners, be adaptable for different learning needs, and offer opportunities for students to exercise leadership to make modifications that contribute to their success in school.

Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $25k → $75k.

3 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 23% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE COMPASS SCHOOL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE COMPASS SCHOOL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 81%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

59% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE COMPASS SCHOOL INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2019 100% · 2020 86% · 2021 99% · 2022 99% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $82k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
