01What it does

What The Cell Theatre Company Ltd does

Mission

The cell theatre is a not-for-profit dedicated to the incubation and presentation of new work across all artistic disciplines that mine the mind, pierce and awaken the soul.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2024 we had an incredibly busy season of productions, in addition to a healthy artist-in-residence program. We hosted three productions at the cell theatre, in addition to a co-production off-site. The first one, the tiger's bride took over all four floors of the building, the off-site co-production arctic explorations utilized a lot of resources early in the year and the final production communion was directed by our artistic director kira simring. 12 artist-in-residencies were granted, one of which being where we meet, a highly anticipated workshop of a play that incorporates original music in a concert-style setting. Our rental program saw it's best year yet with over $90,000 in revenue.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 4 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $158k → $500.

5 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 81% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE CELL THEATRE COMPANY LTD’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE CELL THEATRE COMPANY LTD leans on a few funders — its largest provides 51% of grant income and the top three 88%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

81% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE CELL THEATRE COMPANY LTD.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

17% of THE CELL THEATRE COMPANY LTD's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 25% give in more than one year at all.

Where its funders are

81% of THE CELL THEATRE COMPANY LTD's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $86k that is directly attributable, 94% of it comes from funders outside New York, across 4 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $358k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
