01What it does

What T'Shuvah Center Inc does

Mission

T'shuvah center is a jewish recovery home and community where people with substance and process abuse disorders can join hands on the path toward recovery. Based in new york but global in reach, we nourish wrestling souls by integrating jewish wisdom, text and ritual; the 12 steps; and spirituality. T'shuvah center's programming spans from talmud study to lgbtqi+ support groups, blending insights from ancient texts and cutting-edge research on substance and process abuse disorders.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2023 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

T'shuvah center has elected to cease business as of decemeber 31, 2023 and contribute all remaining funds as directed in the bylaws.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Founded in 2018, t'shuvah center is an intentional, spiritual recovery community for people suffering from substance abuse and process disorders. Based in new york city, the organization integrates jewish wisdom, text and ritual; the 12 steps of aa, and coaching in its evidence-based, innovative program. T'shuvah center offers support in three broad areas: recovery care, training and education, and community engagement. During the pandemic, the organization launched a variety of online support groups for various demographic and interest groups: women, lgbtqia+, artists, those who wish to pray together each morning, and those who wish to study jewish texts, such as torah and talmud, in the context of recovery. T'shuvah center trains clergy and healthcare workers in counseling congregants and patients who are struggling with addiction, or whose loved ones are afflicted. The ceo's podcast, "tattoos and torah," has been downloaded almost 30,000 times since it began in january 2020. And the organization hosts periodic in person events, such as high holiday and shabbat services with a focus on recovery.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $11k → $28k.

3 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 25% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of T'SHUVAH CENTER INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

T'SHUVAH CENTER INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 65% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

90% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund T'SHUVAH CENTER INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $55k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
