01What it does

What Sports Society for American Health does

Mission

Conduct sanctioned events to benefit health and education initiatives.

As stated on its FY2017 Form 990.

Program

Conduct sanctioned events to benefit health and education initiatives. These initiatives include transforming an area ranked the fifth fattest city in the US into what is now gaining a reputation as a running community. Our largest initiative has been our wellness programs in schools through Kids Marathon Clubs. These are free programs that not only educate children on how to be healthy but require them to exercise and develop healthy lifestyle habits. Our program also provides for low-income students to participate in the running events without cost. For the adults, our programs have transformed lives. Many have lost over 100 pounds and one couple lost 500 combined pounds which garnered them media attention.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $21k → $11k.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 55% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

Sports Society for American Health leans on a few funders — its largest provides 44% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Sports Society for American Health.

Where its funders are

55% of Sports Society for American Health's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $25k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Texas funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $31k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
