What Skipp Pearson Foundation does
Mission
The Skipp Pearson Foundation/Skipp Pearson Jazz Foundation was created to preserve America's rich jazz music heritage and to foster a greater appreciation of live jazz music performances for generations to discover and enjoy. Seventy-five per cent of our annual income is spent on educational program content. The "global" pandemic of 2020-2023 made it impossible to present in-person programming of any kind. The Foundation was fortunate to be able to create a series of virtual programs that produced unique content and launched the organization into the "digital age".
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Suspended until 2026. Educational programming in celebration of National Jazz Appreciation Month. Multi-layered public education project that provides a forum for arts organizations from various disciplines to work in partnership. Educational programming done under the project known as International Jazz Day in South Carolina. Note, as the Foundation was unable to fund raise due to a greatly diminished operating budget all efforts were placed on this education program. Even with great hardship and in the face of the current "global" pandemic the Foundation managed to provide a full day of virtual FREE admission programming to all ages. There was a particular focus on elementary school students.

Jazz on the Road was created to act as the Skipp Pearson Jazz Foundation's mobile educational division used to promote and support the Foundation's primary mission; to foster a greater appreciation of live jazz music performances. The Foundation seeks to offer a minimum of twenty-five FREE admission performances per year. Note, COVID-19 and the Federal and State mandated closer throughout 2020 through 2022 made it unsafe to facilitate this program.
$0 spentSouth Carolina's Great Flood of October 2015 left the Skipp Pearson Jazz Foundation's listening venue damaged. Through the offering of the Small Business Administration the Foundation was able to secure a loan to aid in restoration of personal property. Throughout 2016 through 2021 the Foundation continued to repair its damaged facility and return to its regular music education programming on a limited basis. Note, the effect of Tropical Hurricane Florence, Matthew and Maria and four others have prevented the Foundation from accomplishing the recovery goals previously established. COVID-19 has made it necessary to extend the time-line to re-open all projects and program. Projected date is Spring 2027.
$0 spentSVOG award allowed the Foundation use the down time to revamp all areas of its technology, retrain staff, retool equipment supplies and take on the digital age of Ai education. More time is needed. Expected date 9/2026.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars.
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
59% of SKIPP PEARSON FOUNDATION’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (78% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 1 of the last 4 reported years ran a deficit.
Who funds it, year by year
Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.
1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of SKIPP PEARSON FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of SKIPP PEARSON FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $20k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
