01What it does

What Sand Mountain Cooperative Education Center does

Mission

The Center shall house and support programs that facilitate freedom, community-centered development, and cooperative education.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Cooperative Development. The purpose of the cooperative development program is to grow the SMCEC and accomplish the mission of the organization by growing cooperative education and community-centered development through worker-owned businesses. Program accomplishments include founding and securing long-term funding for the Alabama Center for Employee Ownership, another 501c3 nonprofit, which serves as a central resource hub for employee ownership in Alabama. SMCECs cooperative development team built a national network to support successful employee ownership transitions in Alabama, which includes support from experts and funders. The cooperative development team also performed outreach and education on the social and economic benefits of employee ownership to over 150 people and served 3 Alabama businesses in exploring employee ownership options. In order to accomplish this work, the board contracted a returning Lamplight staff member who now resides in Alabama for the purposes of accomplishing this program.

  2. Lamplight Summer Camp Session Two. This session was the standard three week session of Lamplight which SMCEC has run since 2019 in Guntersville, AL. This session was in July and was open to returning campers and new campers. The session served 15 campers. Many youth in our service areas lack structured activities in the summer and school year due to institutional deficits, economic limitations, transportation issues, or parental commitments. Lamplight addresses these needs by offering enriching summer experiences that foster civic engagement, leadership skills, and a sense of community, while also covering basic needs such as childcare, food, and transportation free of charge.

  3. Lamplight Summer Camp Session One. This session marked Lamplights first expansion and was the beginning of youth programming in Birmingham. Lamplight Summer Camp is a free, immersive summer program designed to cultivate leadership among teenagers through self-governance and community service projects. The program served 10 new campers in the Birmingham area over a three week period, with camp running Monday through Friday from 9am-7pm and 9am-9pm on Fridays. On top of providing community-centered cooperative education to campers, Lamplight provided lunch and dinner to all campers and transportation for 7 out of the 10 campers.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

1 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 17% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SAND MOUNTAIN COOPERATIVE EDUCATION CENTER’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SAND MOUNTAIN COOPERATIVE EDUCATION CENTER leans on a few funders — its largest provides 34% of grant income and the top three 83%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

41% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SAND MOUNTAIN COOPERATIVE EDUCATION CENTER.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
