01What it does

What Redbird does

Mission

Redbird is a Native American and environmental charitable and educational association. The primary population we serve is tribal, indigenous, mixed heritage, low income and high risk youth, adults and elders. We do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, tribal enrollment, socio-economic factors, gender, political or religious affiliations or lack thereof.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Highway 2 Motorcycle Track Days on Horse Thief Mile, Willow Springs International Raceway Motorcycle technical skills events with emphasis on control, turning, braking and managing a motorcycle in canyon conditions. This program began in December 2019 as a response to the high accident rate and death toll on the Angeles Crest Highway, which is the main artery through the Angeles National Forest, where Redbird owns and operates the Chilao School property. The program involves relatively high risk and a high expense ratio, but it also has great potential rewards. We are directly influencing how people ride motorcycles and helping them improve their chances of responding appropriately in an emergency situation.

  2. Chilao School, environmental, arts, healing arts and life skills programs In 2021 we continued programs at the school with much-reduced attendance due to Covid, utilizing outdoor spaces whenever possible. We did a number of renovations to the school itself, including the restoration of electricity after a fallen tree had destroyed our power pole; new interior lighting, the addition of an electric vehicle charging station, extensive grading to the adjacent property after a firebreak was created during the Bobcat fire, and several "hardening" exterior upgrades to improve fire safety in the event of the next wildfire.

  3. Redbird's 26th annual Blanket Drive and Mini Powwow December 4, 2022 A family style one day Native American social and spiritual gathering, inviting the public to contribute to a blanket drive for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. The 2021 event was extremely well attended and the end result was four truckloads of donations. Used items were distributed locally and new blankets and winter clothing items were shipped via USPS to the White Plume Family for distribution to needy families throughout the reservation's most remote regions. This was probably our most successful drive in the 26 year history of the event.

A family friendly, public friendly gathering an celebration of indigenous peoples of the western hemisphere. Singing, dancing, drumming, arts, crafts, foods, culture sharing, interactive community and cultural exchange. We were joined by 13 other non profit and human service groups for the 2022 powwow.

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 67% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of REDBIRD’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

REDBIRD leans on a few funders — its largest provides 67% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund REDBIRD.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

67% of REDBIRD's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $750 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside California, across 1 state.

TX

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
