What Real Alternatives does
Mission
Real Alternatives creates, operates, and assists in the formation of life-affirming pregnancy and parenting support services programs for women throughout the country.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
In the Indiana program, Real Alternatives acts as the statewide administrator for the Indiana Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services Program funded by the Indiana State Department of Health(IDOH). During the fiscal year of July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, state and U.S. TANF block grant funds were used on a fee for service basis to provide nonjudgmental, free, caring and confidential pregnancy and parenting support and education to women during pregnancy and 24 months after the birth of their baby. These services occurred during 48,949 visits by 17,722 clients who were in unexpected pregnancies or needed parenting support.
$6,661,184 spent$6,371,463 earned by the program98% of program spendingWhen Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro did not renew the PA Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services Program, Real Alternatives began a Privately-Funded PA Program to empower women with pregnancy and parenting support. The start-up of this privately-funded PA program began in January 2024 following a fundraising campaign. The various start-up and continuing costs of this program include advocacy and educational materials, program administrative costs to pick-up where the government-funded program stopped, and most importantly, a highly successful advertising campaign to reach the women abandoned and alone. This campaign successfully enabled these women to find their closest pregnancy support center or maternity home.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $3.5M to $2.1M (−39%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
1% of Real Alternatives’s revenue is contributions — more earned-revenue than three-quarters of its peers (81% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $161 → $269.
2 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 99% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Real Alternatives’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Real Alternatives leans on a few funders — its largest provides 85% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Real Alternatives.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 72% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
99% of Real Alternatives's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $100 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Pennsylvania, across 1 state.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
