01What it does

What Project Be Free a Nonprofit Corporation does

Mission

The mission of Project Be Free (PBF) is to provide crisis response to individuals affected by domestic violence (DV) through holistic methods to ensure clients and their families adapt healthier norms. First and foremost, PBF addresses the systemic inequities that exist in accessing mental health supports and resources for people from low-income backgrounds, immigrants, and people of color who live in King County that have been affected directly and indirectly by DV. PBF increases equitable access to services by prioritizing people of color, especially those from low-income backgrounds. Our core values include addressing every member within a family unit affected, whether currently or formerly, by DV and ensuring that our support is culturally relevant and adaptable. We ensure we do this by hiring staff that are as diverse as the community we serve.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Crisis Response: We are currently partnered with Renton, Kent, Auburn and Newcastle PD. Through a co-response model our mental health providers show up on scene to help families navigate a DV crisis, as well as provide critical resources. When there is a DV related call, responding officers will call our direct line to access one of our MHPs and request for accompaniment to a household. In 2024 we assisted over 1800 DV calls, with connecting individuals to programs/services listed below.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2022 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income fell $75k → $33k.

4 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 19% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PROJECT BE FREE A NONPROFIT CORPORATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PROJECT BE FREE A NONPROFIT CORPORATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 32% of grant income and the top three 76%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

74% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PROJECT BE FREE A NONPROFIT CORPORATION.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $44k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
