01What it does

What Peaks to People Water Fund does

Mission

The Peaks to People Water Fund aims to protect resources in the cache la poudre and big thompson watersheds by restoring forests to reduce the risk of severe wildfires. These forest restoration projects not only protect water from sedimentation and debris, but also improve forest health and habitat, decrease firefighting costs, and reduce home loss and infrastructure damage. Our goal is to dramatically accelerate forest restoration to reduce the threat of severe wildfire by engaging downstream water users to donate funds for this work.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Over the past fiscal year, peaks to people worked to protect water resources in the cache la poudre and big thompson watersheds from the threat of wildfire. We supported forest health projects to protect important drinking water sources, and scoped additional projects to be funded in the next fiscal year. We convened the big thompson watershed health partnership and we are coordinating this collaborative group to increase the pace and scale of work in the watershed. We continued our partnership with the colorado forest restoration institute to further develop the science in the field to ensure funds are allocated to the most effective forest management projects and to continuously-improved methods for forest restoration. Through our website, blogging and social media, we educated the public about the importance of wildfire mitigation and water resources.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income fell $259k → $175k.

1 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 40% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PEAKS TO PEOPLE WATER FUND’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PEAKS TO PEOPLE WATER FUND leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 87%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

53% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PEAKS TO PEOPLE WATER FUND.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $453k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
