01What it does

What Open Sky Inc does

Mission

From our organizing document: Open Sky is a non-profit founded in August of 2021 organized to promote the mental health and physical wellbeing of New Hampshire's incarcerated population and to cultivate the possibilities of incarceration toward desistance, re-integration and the sharpest possible reduction of recidivism through the introduction of the skill-based discipline of Acting. Open Sky, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that shall operate exclusively for educational and mental health purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future Federal tax code. The NTEE Code we used in our 1023 is 140.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. In carrying out our exempt purpose in 2025, Open Sky held, within the NH State Prison, acting classes that met four times per week for 2-3 hours per day working with an acting ensemble comprised of beginner and advanced students. We have a cohort of about 20 inmates participating as actors plus about 35 inmates involved with technical and set building. According to the Key Informant Interviews conducted by JSI , Open Sky participants experience: Increased self-awareness; an increased sense of self-worth, self-esteem, and self-confidence; increased self-control/decrease impulsivity; improved speech, increased eye contact and improved communication skills; increased empathy and thoughtfulness; ability to think things through and more engagement with others; the ability to find comfort in an uncomfortable situation; an improved way of treating others. Finally, we started a grassroots effort to build a bridge project between incarceration and reintegration starting from skill sets established in our program toward co-operative opportunities focused on livable wage employment and housing opportunities post incarceration. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2022 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $25k → $88k.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 64% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of OPEN SKY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

OPEN SKY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 52% of grant income and the top three 84%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

96% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund OPEN SKY INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2022 100% · 2023 57% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

64% of OPEN SKY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $73k that is directly attributable, 90% of it comes from funders outside New Hampshire, across 3 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $130k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
