What Onestephope does
Mission
OneStepHope works to change the conversation around addiction and mental health by commissioning and creating inspirational and educational content that inspires individuals and families affected by addiction. Denial, contributed to by stigma and shame, is the leading barrier that keeps millions of Americans affected by drug and alcohol addiction from receiving care. OneStep creates content that changes the conversation around recovery, and supports other innovative efforts that fill important gaps in the recovery ecosystem. In 2017, OneStepHope was founded and shot four short films capturing stories of hope and recovery. Portions of OneStepHope's films were viewed over 30,000 times on social media.
As stated on its FY2017 Form 990.
Program
Content creation and sharing. OneStepHope has begun to change the conversation around recovery and mental health through storytelling. In the final eight months of 2017, the OneStepHope team created and published 4 short films capturing stories of recovery. An additional 8 short films (4 - 5 min. apiece) have been commissioned, and are in various stages of the process. Capturing these stories involves a significant amount of work and labor. In its role as a film producer, the OneStepHope team achieved the following in 2017 to support its storytelling work: (1) finalized contracts with four filmmakers across the U.S. to capture stories (2) conducted fifteen in-depth interviews conducted with potential film subjects (3) organized four separate filming dates, including location planning and approval (4) spent ten to twenty hours per film on story and film editing (5) developed short "trailer" versions of the story. OneStepHope films were shared via social media -- www.facebook.com/onestephope -- and amassed over 30,000 views in total. One of the unexpected highlights of this process has been how individuals that we've partnered with to tell their stories have experienced greater…

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $6k → $7k.
2 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 61% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of ONESTEPHOPE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
ONESTEPHOPE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
61% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ONESTEPHOPE.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
61% of ONESTEPHOPE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $7k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside California, across 1 state.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $11k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
