What Old North Illuminated Inc does
Mission
Old north illuminated inspires active citizenship and courageous, compassionate leadership by interpreting and preserving the old north church & historic site (located in boston's north end). Oni envisions a future in which everyone will see their stories, struggles, and hopes reflected in places of prominence and our shared american history. Programming focuses on three aims: on-site interpretation of the historic site, preservation of the historic site, and developing lesson plans and digital resources for classrooms and adult learners across the country.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Interpretation and education:each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors experience old north church & historic site. Centering the church's history in contemporary relevance, our interpretation weaves together the seminal story of revere's midnight ride with themes of active citizenship and the church's paradoxical ties to 18th century enslavement. Additionally, oni supports educators across the country with curricula and enrichment materials that take a fresh look at the past and encourage students to identify themselves as active citizens who are gaining the wisdom, confidence and motivation to participate in their communities. In the 2023 - 2024 school year, the program expanded to reach 14,000+ students in 44 states. In 2024, oni began a major restoration project to recover and restore 20 cherub murals painted in the early 18th century.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $4.0M to $5.7M (+42%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 47% · 2022 21% · 2023 5% · 2024 2%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
35% of OLD NORTH ILLUMINATED INC’s revenue is contributions — more earned-revenue than three-quarters of its peers (82% for the typical peer).

In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $316k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
