Mission

Historic Museum and programs

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. We operate a small one room schoolhouse museum for history and genealogy research. We do programs in the town schools and the children come to our museum. We provide this service for at least 120 students each year. The museum is open free of charge every Monday and Wednesday and we had many people use our research material.

  2. We also have six programs each year that are free to the public. Our average attendance is 40 people; including members and non-members. We send out press releases to help advertise these events and draw in more people.

    $350 spent

  3. We own an old farm site with a mill pond and hiking trails. The trails are available for free public use. We do not have a way of monitoring the usage that the trails get. We have no expenses that are directly attributable to maintenance of this land or trails at this time.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $5k → $6k.

1 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 54% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NORTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 4 of 5 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NORTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 54% of grant income and the top three 89%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

54% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NORTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2021 100% · 2022 83% · 2023 96% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

54% of NORTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $22k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Massachusetts funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $25k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
