What Northwest Montessori School does
Mission
To provide an individualized learning environment, based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, that is designed to help students become independent, life-long learners who are academically grounded and socially confident about their place in the world.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Program
Northwest Montessori School was founded in 1965. Currently, we have 181 students between the ages of 2 1/2 and 12 years old. Northwest Montessori School is based on the Montessori method of education and is recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale. We have three locations in the Seattle area. All of our preschool classrooms maintain a one to ten teacher ratio. Our elementary program is approved by the superintendent of public education for Washington State. At its core, the Montessori philosophy respects children as they are and creates carefully prepared classroom environments that foster the fulfillment of each child's highest potential. Montessori teachers use the dynamic educational approach to carefully observe and best meet the evolving developmental needs of each student, the three year age span in each classroom also allows children to progress at their own intellectual pace, to learn individually and together, and to grow into social and emotional maturity naturally. The average teacher longevity is ten years. All of our teachers have a diploma award from the Association of Montessori Internationale.Northwest Montessori School offers the Spanish language to…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $1.2M to $3.1M (+149%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 13% · 2022 9% · 2023 1% · 2024 2% · 2025 1%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
3% of Northwest Montessori School’s revenue is contributions — more earned-revenue than three-quarters of its peers (48% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 6 funders, grant income rose $9k → $34k.
5 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 84% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Northwest Montessori School’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Northwest Montessori School leans on a few funders — its largest provides 73% of grant income and the top three 91%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
84% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Northwest Montessori School.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 89% · 2019 100% · 2020 95% · 2021 91% · 2022 88% · 2023 71% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
75% of Northwest Montessori School's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 40% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
84% of Northwest Montessori School's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $32k that is directly attributable, 91% of it comes from Washington funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $163k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
