01What it does

What North American Nature Photography Association does

Mission

This organization provides education, fosters professionalism and ethical conduct, gathers and disseminates information, and develops standards for all persons interested in the field of nature photography.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

On its FY2022 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

In November of 2022, after evaluating our short- and mid-term financial condition vis-a-vis upcoming obligations, especially with regard to event and venue contracts for 2023, NANPA formed a partnership with one of our sister photography associations, the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP). The agreement requires that ASMP operates all of NANPAs programming and events, very much like an external Association Management Company does, and also required that ASMP assumed responsibility for and paid in full all of NANPAs existing and future contractual obligations. To facilitate this, NANPA transferred its operating funds to ASMP; the agreement however maintained the majority of NANPAs reserve (non-operating) funds in a separate account at ASMP, only usable with the consent of the NANPA Board and a group of other key NANPA stakeholders. As a part of this partnership, both organizations get to cross-market and attend each others events at member rates, and have access to each others resources and benefits. During the period of partnership, NANPA maintains its own members, its own elected Board of Directors and Committees, and most importantly the right to claw back funds and end the partnership should ASMP fail to meet any of its obligations.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. Miscellaneous general benefits provided and costs incurred to benefit members, newsletter, directory, committee expenses, website costs, etc.

  2. Road shows, regional events & photography celebration same general purpose as the annual meeting except on a smaller scale.

  3. Nanpa conducts a meeting held every year that allows amateurs as well as professional photographers to share knowledge and new techniques. Workshops and round table discussions are held to further new skills as well as encourage ethical conduct. The meeting provides opportunities to network with other photographers and be a voice with public, private and government agencies for the benefit of nature photography. The attendance has grown to over 2500 members since it's first meeting in february of 1995.

The 3 programs described on its FY2022 Form 990, listed largest first by expense.
