Mission
The national press photographers association is the only u.s. Organization solely dedicated to the advancement of visual journalism, in both video and photography - its creation, practice, training, editing and distribution, in all news media. The nppa works to promote its role as a vital public service.

Programs
Education: the nppa offers a variety of in-person and online programs to enhance the professional and business skills of visual journalists. Included in the events are the northern short course, a 3-day conference with dozens of lectures and workshops taught by industry leaders on topics relevant to professionals and students and portfolio reviews conducted by top photo editors. The women in visual journalism is a 2-day in-person event that offers similar education and inspiration in the context of issues faced by women in the field. In addition, nppa hosts two intense, week-long training workshops about video news stories, advanced storytelling and multimedia presentations. These highly regarded programs involve presentations by award-winning visual journalists; coaching and candid critiques; and in-the-field assignments. The nppa offers a photography portfolio review, helping to provide meaningful work through short interviews with editors. Finally, nppa conducts webinars and in person gatherings focused on timely issues.
Publication: the nppa publishes stories in its online news photographer magazine discussing trends, issues, and information for professionals and students alike. The magazine's columns and news stories are often cited as "the authority" on topics ranging from law and ethics to technology. The publication is available online and the content is updated regularly.
Member services: nppa delivers value to its membership and the broader profession by serving as the leading advocate for the rights of visual journalists. We join coalitions and also act individually to address local, state and federal policy issues that affect journalists' ability to serve the public. We file amicus briefs on a wide range of cases from drones to the right to record. Nppa also fosters the highest standards in visual journalism with its code of ethics which is the gold-standard in the industry. Further, nppa's best of photojournalism competition - renowned as "the contests designed for photojournalists by photojournalists, and incorporating the many facets of the visual journalism industry - annually attracts the most talented professionals in still, video, multimedia, and editing. Other monthly and quarterly contests complement the bop competition and showcase outstanding work.
