01What it does

What Nola Grannies does

Mission

Provide aid to asylum seekers traveling through New Orleans, LA.

As stated on its FY2022 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Provided kits of food, water & toiletries to 451 legal asylum seekers, traveling through New Orleans to sponsors around the US. These travelers lacked basic necessities and the money to buy them. The original mission of the NOLA Grannies was to provide food, water, diapers, toys, warm clothes, hygiene supplies and information to asylum seekers as they made their way by bus across the country from detention centers to their sponsor's homes. The Grannies also assisted families with bus tickets, meals when buses were missed or running late, and a warm welcome to help allay their fears in an unknown environment. Before made a series of escalating changes to U.S. immigration policies, While the Grannies had assisted a total of 8,214 women, men, and children in 2019 and 451 in 2020, changes to US immigration policies by the previous administration led to a slow-down and then to an eventual halt as asylum seekers were required to remain in Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocols. This policy virtually ended legal asylum claims and the flow of migrants slowed to a trickle while the population of migrant detention centers throughout Louisiana swelled.

  2. Assisted local grassroots organizations to support their immigrant populations. With the flow of migrants reduced, the NOLA Grannies changed focus to assist those who were struggling in their new circumstances. Because our funds were being less used in the bus station outreach, we created a small grant program to help local grassroots organizations support their immigrant populations.

  3. Assisted grassroots organizations on the border who are providing humanitarian assistance to asylum seekers. Because asylum seekers were being required to remain in Mexico while their claims went forward through the US immigration process, the NOLA Grannies instituted a program to assist grassroots organizations on the border who were providing humanitarian assistance to the asylum seekers. The NOLA Grannies provided funding to Team Brownsville's Senda de Vida Shelter Project.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $2k → $11.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $26 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
