01What it does

What New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation does

Mission

The nmccf is dedicated to providing support to adult patients for their nonmedical financial needs such as rent, mortgage payments, utilities and transportation during the mangement of their disease. The nmccf also provides educational and other support to patients, their families and caregivers to meet their emotional and psychological needs during cancer treatment. Ongoing continuing medical education programs are developed to provide updated information on clinical practice and quality patient-focused care, thereby fostering excellence with clinicians and other health professionals.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2025 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

Lung screening & outreach - expanded for 2025 and will contract in 2026.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. Client grant program: the nmccf addresses the financial insecurity that often results from a debilitating disease diagnosis. Following a needs-based assessment, the nmccf provides direct payments to third parties for non-medical financial needs. These include rents, mortgages, transportation, temporary lodging, utilities, gas, and nutrition as well as other expenses during treatment. Clients are eligible for up to $6,000 per year.

  2. Lung cancer screening & outreach program:the nmccf is advancing innovative solutions to remove access barriers prevalent in new mexico by focusing on lung cancer screening and access to care for any lung diseased diagnosis with an emphasis on native american communities in 2025 with its outreach arm of the program. The foundation initiated a 1-year partnership with a native american community outreach specialist to develop relationships with tribal communities to address health inequities by removing barriers within those communities created by geography, economics, provider relationship, and limited trust established by centuries of cultural marginalization.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $7k → $21k.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 10% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $102k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America). These are real filings, and they are not money NEW MEXICO CANCER CENTER FOUNDATION raised.

From the IRS filings of NEW MEXICO CANCER CENTER FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NEW MEXICO CANCER CENTER FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 72% of grant income and the top three 84%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

92% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NEW MEXICO CANCER CENTER FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $11k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
