01What it does

What Nectandra Institute does

Mission

Nectandra Institute's mission is to promote the conservation of the montane cloud forests of Costa Rica through public education, scientific research, and watershed stewardship.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Outreach and education program: Outreach and education efforts were directed primarily to rural communities of Costa Rica's upper Balsa River watershed. Nectandra Institute worked closely with a consortium of local community watershed management associations on efforts aimed at improving protection for the watershed forests and water resources, including co-organizing and sponsoring an annual "New culture of Water" month. Through these activities, Nectandra Institute and our community partners build public awareness for watershed protection through a series of educational, recreational and entertainment activities. During the year, we hold workshops and training sessions on topics such as conservation, ecological restoration, and environmental stewardship. Outreach efforts also include online videos, images and information.

  2. Conservation, Restoration and Advocacy programs: Restoration and conservation efforts continued on lands totalling 570 acres purchased by local community organizations with eco-loans from Nectandra Institute. During 2022, we co-ordinated over 862 person-hours of restoration and monitoring work, including tree planting, measuring tree growth, monitoring the water volume flowing from springs and in streams, and photo documentation of forest restoration progress. Conservation of lands acquired through Nectandra Institute eco-loans has improved the protection of the sources of drinking water for ca. 16000 people. Additional conservation work continued on 40 acres of land owned by Nectandra Institute. We increased participation with other regional and national organizations to exchange topical information including the inter-institutional commission for the Paseo de Nubes bio-corridor, which exists to strengthen the biological connectivity between Juan Castro Blanco National Park and the Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Preserve--a species and endemism hotspot, and CONAFLU, a national confederation of water management associations in Costa Rica.

  3. Inventory work continued on the fauna of the Nectandra Cloud Forest Preserve, with special focus this year on parasitic flies and wasps with collaboration of two US entomologists. Malaise traps were used to continuously trap flying insects 24/7 at selected sites. Thirty thousand specimens were preserved, sorted, and submitted for DNA bar coding to identify the trapped insects. The results are being analyzed and compared to other known collecting ites in Costa Rica.

1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NECTANDRA INSTITUTE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of NECTANDRA INSTITUTE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $76 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
