01What it does

What National Center for Advanced Technologies Inc does

Mission

The national center for advanced technologies (ncat) was founded as a non-profit research and education foundation to provide a bridge between government, industry, and academia, and to encourage cooperative efforts on technology development. Ncat's initial years were dedicated to the development and publication of eight national strategic plans for technology development under the umbrella program key technologies for the year 2000. On completion of that program in 1992, ncat turned its efforts toward affordability initiatives. Most of these initiatives cross the conventional boundaries between government, industry, and academia.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Arc program: america rocketry challenge (arc) is the world's largest student rocket competition and key piece of the aerospace and defense industry's strategy to build a stronger u.s. Workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (stem). Sponsored by the aerospace industries association (aia) and the national association of rocketry (nar), arc was created in the fall of 2002 as a one-time celebration of the centennial of flight, but by popular demand became an annual program. Contributions received for the arc program are donor restricted when received and released when program expenditures are incurred.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 73% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $300k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Aerospace Industries Association). These are real filings, and they are not money NATIONAL CENTER FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES INC raised.

From the IRS filings of NATIONAL CENTER FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NATIONAL CENTER FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 73% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

73% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NATIONAL CENTER FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 50% · 2021 50% · 2022 50% · 2023 63% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

73% of NATIONAL CENTER FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $270k that is directly attributable, 63% of it comes from Virginia funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $716k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
