What National Automobile Dealers Association does
Mission
Represents and lobbies on behalf of franchised car and truck dealers before the US Congress and executive branch on legislative and regulatory matters. Also represents dealers in certain interactions with car and truck manufacturers. NADA provides education to its members on important legal, legislative and regulatory issues impacting their business. NADA provides various education and training services to its members to help them improve their sales, service and operational skills.

Programs
Conventions & Exhibitions - The NADA convention and exhibitions contribute importantly to the exempt function by bringing the membership together to meet with factory and after market product representatives. The purpose is to inform members of current developments in the retail automobile industry.
Dealership Management Services - These activities are significant elements contributing to the exempt function by providing automobile dealers with information designed to improve dealership performance. Programs include: dealer candidate academy, the 20 Group program, seminars, and a general dealership management program.
Industry Relations - The purpose of this program is to develop and advocate positions which will improve the dealers relationship with manufacturers.
Government Relations - Protects dealer interests before the US Congress. The staff communicates with members of Congress to express the position of dealers on various issues, prepares testimony for congressional hearings when appropriate, and attempts to modify legislation to address dealers' concerns. It monitors legislative activities such as hearings, markups, conferences, etc., communicates with the dealer body on legislative matters, and directs dealer efforts to communicate with members of Congress.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $356M to $414M (+16%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 3 of the last 8 reported years ran a deficit.

Who funds it, year by year

From the IRS filings of National Automobile Dealers Association’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
National Automobile Dealers Association leans on a few funders — its largest provides 98% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
98% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund National Automobile Dealers Association.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
National Automobile Dealers Association draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside Virginia, across 2 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
