01What it does

What Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology Inc does

Mission

Using legal advocacy to make advances in science and technology safer for people and the planet.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Legal advocates for safe science and technology, inc. (lasst) established a court advocacy program that includes (1) litigation surveillance to identify ongoing cases relevant to bio risks and advanced artificial intelligence risks, (2) the preparation of amicus (friend-of-the-court) briefs in strategic cases, and (3) identification and development of strategic interventions addressing emerging risks. The program identified cases establishing precedent relevant to pathogens with enhanced pandemic potential, and lasst filed its first motion to appear as amicus in one of those cases, partnering with leading virology and epidemiology academics and securing pro bono representation from a top law firm. Lasst also developed an amicus brief addressing artificial intelligence risks and worked with partners to file it. The court advocacy program also equipped lasst with timely information to engage with media and other advocacy organizations about relevant cases, helping to shape public discourse on mission-relevant issues.

3 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 87% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund LEGAL ADVOCATES FOR SAFE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INC.

Where its funders are

87% of LEGAL ADVOCATES FOR SAFE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $100k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside New York, across 1 state.

WA

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $656k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
