01What it does

What Knox Community Hospital does

Mission

The mission of Knox Community Hospital is to provide compassionate healthcare service that exceeds the expectations of our community. As the only hospital in knox county, we offer a wide spectrum of healthcare services to every person who needs us, regardless of their ability to pay.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Our assistance to our community goes beyond offering primary services and impacts our community's health and quality of life. Knox Community Hospital is an acute care hospital serving knox county in ohio and surrounding areas. The hospital offers a wide spectrum of healthcare services including inpatient and outpatient health care. For 2024, the hospital had 3,964 inpatient admissions, 24,331 er visits, 156,814 outpatient visits, 82,927 radiology procedures, and 5,889 inpatients & outpatient surgeries (including endoscopies). During 2024, the hospital had 48 employed physicians with 168,963 office clinic visits. In 2024, Knox Community Hospital provided a broad array of health education and awareness resources as well as prevention information, services and screenings free of charge to support the health and wellbeing of the knox area community. Community events have remained steady over the last year, as community organizations partner to increase awareness, and most have returned to holding in-person events that ceased during covid. Kch was able to provide programs and services for the community benefit through a number of different methods.

  2. Volunteers remained active in specific areas of the hospital, providing needed services such assisting visitors at the front desks of the hospital's three main buildings, assisting patients in surgery waiting, managing the two gift shops and assisting in the center for cancer care. Funds raised through the gift shops provide health care scholarships to local students. A total of 62 volunteers served 10,661 hours during the year.

  3. Kch has strong partnerships with the nursing schools in the area colleges/universities, and toward that end, provided clinical supervision and precepting for students. The total number of students' clinical hours in 2024 was 15,196, with additional 2,234 hours of job shadowing, as well. Since kch is the only hospital in the county, this is critical to help support these students' goals and to help meet the shortage of nursing staff that is evident both locally and across the country.

  4. According to the community health assessment conducted in 2024, 23% of respondents rank chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, and strokes) as a top community health concern. One community member stated, "most people don't know they have heart disease." respondents reported that they believe the top issues for chronic diseases are poor diet/obesity; alcohol/tobacco/substance use; lack of affordability; older homes.to help increase awareness of possible heart disease and access to care, Knox Community Hospital conducted 20-minute heart checks for a total of 46 community members, at a greatly reduced fee of $20 per person. In addition, to increase cancer awareness and prevention, one of our efforts included a campaign regarding the importance of colon cancer screenings. Held during march, colorectal cancer awareness month, the hospital used website, social media, press release, flyers and more to encourage the community to pick up free colon cancer screening kits and return the samples for testing in our labs. A total of 400 kits were picked up and 215 kits were tested in the lab.clinical staff from both diabetes education and…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $20k → $55.

2 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 1% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $14M from 3 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest The Knox Community Hospital Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money KNOX COMMUNITY HOSPITAL raised.

From the IRS filings of KNOX COMMUNITY HOSPITAL’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KNOX COMMUNITY HOSPITAL leans on a few funders — its largest provides 89% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KNOX COMMUNITY HOSPITAL.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 75% · 2020 97% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
