01What it does

What HOYA Foundation does

Mission

Our mission is twofold: 1 Help small businesses - especially minority and woman owned - develop to better be able to do work in transportation and construction and 2 Help girls discover sustainable careers in transportation and construction. Minority and women owned businesses traditionally get less than 12 of the work on public construction and transportation projects. Women are only 8 of the construction workforce. With high paying and sustainable jobs in construction, this career can have a huge impact on a woman's economic equity over her lifetime.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. US Department of Transportation - West Central Small Business Transportation Resource Center. The HOYA Foundation manages this federal grant from the US Department of Transportation to assist small disadvantaged businesses in building their capacity to bid on and perform on transportation projects and professional service procurements. This grant covers a 5 state area - Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska and South Dakota. The HOYA Foundation provides outreach, work with state agencies, building business capacity coaching for small businesses and Bonding Education Programs.

  2. Transportation and Construction Girl is committed to expanding career opportunities for young women, supporting equity for young women, enhancing young women's self-esteem and helping to meet the workforce shortage in construction. Currently, only 8 of the construction workforce is women. That means huge opportunity for young women. Transportation and Construction Girl Day starts with fun and cool exhibits from 8:30am - 11:30am. The HOYA Foundation presents 4 scholarships and honors the young girls who graduated from Career Days for Girls. Girls are seated with sponsors so that they can learn more about the business of construction and create connections that can support them through their careers.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 7 funders, grant income rose $5k → $38k.

4 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 46% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HOYA Foundation’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HOYA Foundation leans on a few funders — its largest provides 30% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

46% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HOYA Foundation.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $55k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
