What Heartwood Therapeutic Learning Community does

Mission

We purpose to provide a child-centered early education experience that celebrates individual differences in sensory processing, social-emotional regulation, and academic learning. Through evidenced-based therapeutic frameworks and a neurodiversity affirming, collaborative ethos, we strive to nurture meaningful relationships to self, others, and learning. Our vision is to create a supportive educational environment where preschool and elementary-aged students access rich learning opportunities alongside their peers, caregivers and community members. By utilizing individualized academic and therapeutic plans to meet students where they are, we aim to provide flexible learning opportunities that reflect individual interests, strengths, values, and goals.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. "3-5 years old/preschool" - we served a total of 6 families by providing a student-led, neurodiversity affirming early childhood program that included instruction by a special education teacher, along with occupational therapy and speech and language therapy services to students. We provided a child-centered early education experience that celebrates individual differences in sensory processing, social-emotional regulation, and academic learning. Program was implemented using evidenced based frameworks (examples: embedded instruction, dir floortime, act therapy, and total communication) to create a supportive educational environment where students accessed flexible learning opportunities in a neurodiversity affirming manner that reflects individual interests, strengths, values, and goals.
