What Hawaii Tax Help and Financial Empowerment Solutions does

Mission

To build individual wealth and stronger communities by (1) providing free tax assistance to low-to-moderate income Hawaii residents in conjunction with the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program which enables taxpayers to save money while complying with their tax obligations and (2) providing educational workshops and materials to the general public relating to financial literacy with a focus on preventing tax-related debt.

Programs

  1. This non-profit was established in April of 2016 to provide a dedicated platform for a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program that had been operating as a program under another non-profit since 2006. Since 2006 and as of Tax Season 2025, our VITA Program has prepared 65,675 federal and state tax returns for Hawaii residents saving them approximately $16.4 Million in tax preparation fees and helping them claim $138.8 Million in refunds and refundable tax credits. Program service expenses listed include only direct program expenses and not general expenses for the organization such as insurance costs, fees or bookkeeping software.

1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HAWAII TAX HELP AND FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT SOLUTIONS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of HAWAII TAX HELP AND FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT SOLUTIONS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $416 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
