What Greater Astoria Historical Society does

Mission

The Society, along with our associate, Forgotten NY have earned the respect of Queens Borough (and beyond!) for our tireless output of programs, news features (we have 4 boro wide with a readership well into the 6 figures), tours (we have covered most Queens communities, book publishing, school programs)

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. The historical society and its affilate, the legendary Forgotten NY, has a strong and quite lively programs delivered to the public in lecture spaces, outdoor locatons, and a new effort to each out to school children at their schools. This year we are doing a series on year Revolutionary War locations in Queens, in the process of redoing our website, and have by-lines in Queens with three papers with a total readership of about 400,000. We are also involved in advocating the 150 year old Reformed Church of Astoria, a victom of a recent fire, into a community center.

The Society has on record one of the most comprehensive image databases of New York City (yes, including seldom seen images of Queens) through the generosity the late William Steinway and Bob Stonehill (known as the "Post Card Man." A donation was granted to us last month of a major fashion photographer - 70 cartons of slides recording New York in the past 60 years. This year we have developed a series of outstanding programs around the Revolutoinary War in Queens (including the Blackwell Door). We REMAIN A source of images for authors, institutions, and the film industry (we helped Baz Lurhman with Great Gatzby - he got an Acedemy Award on Set Design us a special mention.)

2 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 99% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GREATER ASTORIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GREATER ASTORIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 98% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GREATER ASTORIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2020 58% · 2021 99% · 2022 85% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

99% of GREATER ASTORIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $110 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from New York funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $11k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
