Mission

Fos amplifies the collective impact of the global conservation community by providing practitioners with the skills and tools needed to be more effective and efficient in their efforts to foster thriving ecosystems, conserve natural resources, and advance human well-being. We help teams overcome obstacles to learning and collaboration by promoting a common framework for the planning and management of conservation projects. Collaborating directly with conservation teams, we strengthen skills and provide the tools needed for teams to be more strategic, efficient, and effective. Across the world, we bring together conservation practitioners, funders, and educators to share lessons and ask tough questions. The result is a more innovative and disciplined conservation community prepared to take on the threats to our planet.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Develop frameworks & tools:- fos continued work on its take-conservation-to-scale initiative, rolling out and further refining its conservation to scale challenge tool to help conservation practitioners explore taking their conservation programs to scale (see: https://fosonline.org/our-work/scaling-conservation/). Specifically, we supported teams working around the world, including pew charitable trust, conservation international, dynamic planet revive our oceans team, and cartier foundation and donor partners.- fos supported wwf international to update its practical guidance on threat ratings and pause-and-reflect processes. These were critical missing pieces that will help round out a broader suite of how-to guidance for implementing wwf's project and programme management standards (its standards for good conservation practice) and will be used by wwf staff around the globe. - fos and the miradi development team worked on major enhancements to miradi share: (1) navigation within miradi projects and miradi share programs was overhauled based on user feedback. The new navigation structure makes it easier to see everyone involved in miradi programs or projects, provides better and…

The result of this coordination is improved conservation practices, the ability to demonstrate collective impact, and increased societal support for conservation. Accomplishments include:- fos continued to support cross-organizational learning through the coordination of and participation in the conservation measures partnership (cmp). With funding from the gordon and betty moore foundation, fos provided fiscal, coordination, and technical support to initiatives on behavior change, conservation monitoring effectiveness techniques (comet), actions classification system, and policy impact.- fos led the update process for the open standards for the practice of conservation (conservation standards, v 5.0) - cmp's flagship product widely used by conservation teams around the world. Fos staff coordinated the overall process and led several technical, thematic groups to gather and distill input for updates from the conservation standards community.…

Together, we are creating the next generation of conservation leaders. Accomplishments include:- fos co-taught a five-day virtual course in collaboration with alcedo conservation and focused on all 5 steps of the conservation standards. Alcedo conservation has become the "go-to" place for individuals looking to learn more about the conservation standards and how to implement them.fos facilitated a one-day introductory training to interested participants of the north american congress on conservation biology in vancouver, canada. This training was a great opportunity to reach a broad audience of both academics and practitioners. This generated a lot of interest in the conservation standards and, more importantly, in effective approaches to conservation planning, monitoring, and adaptation.

1 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
