What For Michigan does
Mission
To empower students in Michigan's higher education institutions to take leadership in their community and increase their participation in the democratic process. We strengthen students' voices in developing and advocating for legislation and government programs to improve their community, provide civic leadership training, and organize high-impact mobilization efforts.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
To empower students in Michigan's higher education institutions For Michigan built campus teams at 41 out of 78 of Michigan's higher education institutions. Teams held daily activities at each campus to promote civic engagement and responsibility. This was accomplished by providing information on how to vote, election locations & times, educational materials, discussing issues of the week, and listening to student concerns. The organization provided $325k in grant assistance used to provide nonpartisan civic responsibility education. To provide further nonpartisan student outreach we collaborated with For Michigan Action Fund. Throughout the collaboration, the organization expended $500k for doorknockers, digital, and nonpartisan student focused research, $11.3k for management and advisory services, $256k in contractor support for voter registration, and $177.4k on staff salaries to educate students on their concerns and the voting process. FY 2024 Metrics: 54.5k plans to vote, 5k voter registrations, knocked 65k doors, held 15k relational conversations, sent 1.2M text messages providing voter education (618k in-house, and 593k by vendor) and made 402k calls (in-house), obtaining…

Who funds it, year by year
Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.
2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 3% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of FOR MICHIGAN’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
FOR MICHIGAN leans on a few funders — its largest provides 96% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FOR MICHIGAN.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
99% of FOR MICHIGAN's grant income comes from Michigan funders.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $175k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
