What Fair Michigan Foundation does

Mission

The purposes for which Fair Michigan Foundation is organized are exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code of 1986. Includes: Conducting research and educating the public on issues related to civil rights, and non-discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity; advocating for these purposes to the extent that no substantial part of the activities is carrying on the propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, except as otherwise provided under section 501(h) of the code.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Fair Michigan Justice Project (FMJP) is a collaboration between Fair Michigan and the Wayne County Michigan Prosecutor's Office which focuses on capital offenses committed against members of the LGBTQ community. The FMJP investigates and prosecutes these cases, using our unique access to the LGBTQ community to assist victims and work with witnesses, making the Detroit Metro area safer for all members of the community. Aspects of the FMJP have been extended to Ingham, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties, including guidance in investigating and prosecuting crimes against LGBTQ persons and victim assistance.

  2. Fair Michigan outreach services include discussion and education in our community about LGBTQ issues, working with law enforcement to improve handling of crime involving LGBTQ persons, creating connections in the community to help fight crime, and providing both emergency and longer term assistance to victims and community members, sometimes in collaboration with existing organizations such as shelters, food pantries, and medical and counseling facilities.

  3. Fair Michigan Renaming Project helps deserving and vulnerable transgender individuals in Southeastern Michigan secure legal name and gender marker changes. Not having state-issued IDs that reflect their actual name and gender can seriously impact their safety as well as opportunities for housing and employment. We guide them through the process, including legal and financial help. Our clients must meet the qualifications for a name and marker change and show financial need.
