01What it does

What European Christmas Market does

Mission

To foster germanic arts and heritage and revive cultural traditions, and to host an authentic, charming, and family friendly holiday event in minnesota patterned upon European Christmas Markets that arise each year before christmas.

As stated on its FY2026 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Ecm expanded the market to the largest number of vendor kiosks in an attractive european-style christmas market during the weekends between the day after thanksgiving until the weekend before christmas in 2024. The festival area was 10% larger than the previous year. The area of the market dedicated to children and family activities was expanded further and the free carousel was enchanting, and the free family train ride was a hoot!! More than 250,000 visitors enjoyed the experience at the market.

  2. The entertainment was expanded throughout the entire time period of the christmas market in 2024. Live reindeer participated, and saint nicholas/santa claus was there too for the children and families. Ukranian, irish and other ethnic groups danced and sang, wearing colorful clothing appropriate to their cultures. Musicians played instruments and sang christmas songs to all visitors, all from the stage at the center of the entire christmas market.

  3. Ecm also repaired kiosks and built some new kiosks for the 2024 market, so as to have the huts/kiosks/enclosures provide an appealing appearance to visitors, all adorned with bright and shining christmas stars that are illuminated from within all from germany, and named herrenhutter stars. The market also featured its various vendors with their unique ethnic foods and their ethnic clothing for winter wear, on local tv channels and also on social media such as facebook, instagram, tiktok, and other venues.

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 29% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKET’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKET leans on a few funders — its largest provides 71% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

29% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKET.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKET's grant income comes from Minnesota funders.

MN

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $20k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
