What Ethos Environmental Inc does

Mission

Ethos Environmental is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping rural communities and small family farms thrive. The organization provides practical, compassionate assistance to rural individuals and community groups facing environmental, economic, geographic, and physical challenges. Ethos Environmental supports responsible environmental stewardship, wildfire resilience, watershed protection, and community safety while also strengthening local grassroots organizations through fiscal sponsorship and project development assistance.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2025 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

During the year, Ethos Environmental expanded its work in three significant ways: 1. The organization launched the Spyrock Safe Access and Roadside Fuels Reduction effort, a substantially larger wildfire resilience initiative than prior years. This work includes reducing hazardous roadside vegetation along critical evacuation and emergency-access routes in the Spy Rock and greater Laytonville area, improving the ability of emergency responders and residents to safely enter and leave remote communities during wildfire events. 2. Ethos Environmental developed a new Spyrock Resilience program focused on reducing wildfire risk and improving long-term environmental resilience in the Spy Rock area. The program combines wildfire transmission reduction with erosion-control strategies by creating and maintaining strategic fuels reduction areas and using resulting woody biomass to stabilize gullies and vulnerable slopes. This work is intended to reduce wildfire spread, protect roads and homes, and decrease erosion and sediment delivery to the Eel River watershed. 3. The organization increased its fiscal sponsorship and project-management capacity to support additional grassroots community groups. Ethos Environmental currently provides fiscal sponsorship and administrative support to local projects including Spy Rock Ready! Fire Safe Council, the Mendocino Craft Farmers Auction, and the Mendo Cup, and began improving its intake and tracking systems to expand that support.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. The organizations largest program service accomplishment during the year was the Spyrock Safe Access Roadside Fuels Reduction project. Ethos Environmental worked with local residents, Fire Safe Councils, and partner agencies to reduce hazardous roadside vegetation along main trunk access roads in the Spy Rock community. These roads serve as the only access and evacuation routes for many rural households. Dense roadside vegetation, narrow travel corridors, and accumulated fuels had created substantial wildfire risk and threatened the ability of emergency responders to reach homes. Project activities included planning and implementing roadside vegetation reduction, developing long-term maintenance strategies, coordinating with local volunteer groups, and prioritizing roads serving elderly, disabled, and otherwise vulnerable residents. The project also supported maintenance of emergency access to fire-water tanks and improved the likelihood that firefighters and medical responders could safely reach homes during emergencies. The project produced significant public benefit by improving evacuation safety, reducing wildfire transmission risk, increasing access for emergency responders,…
