What Dsm Mutual Aid does
Mission
DSM Mutual Aid (DMMA) provides material and financial assistance to unhoused and housed individuals residing primarily in Polk County, Iowa. Assistance includes the distribution of propane, tents, food, water, household and personal care items, and financial support for bond payments, legal representation and other expenses related to arrest, incarceration and court proceedings. DMMA's activities are guided by principles of mutual aid and community support to address immediate needs and promote stability for individuals facing economic or legal hardship.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.
FORM 990, Part III, LINE 3 - DID THE ORGANIZATION CEASE CONDUCTING, OR MAKE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN HOW IT CONDUCTS ANY PROGRAM SERVICES? Yes. During calendar year 2024, DSM Mutual Aid (DMMA) served as the fiscal sponsor for the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund (ITMAF), EIN: 99-1813384, which was incorporated on January 2, 2024, and subsequently received IRS recognition of exemption under IRC §501(c)(3) on July 21, 2025, retroactive to the incorporation date. As ITMAF's fiscal sponsor during 2024, DMMA retained fiscal oversight to ensure charitable use of funds, while day-to-day administration and documentation of receipts and disbursements were managed by ITMAF. Accordingly, ITMAF's revenues and expenses are fully reported on DMMA's Form 990 for the year ended December 31, 2024. ITMAF has filed its own Form 990-EZ for 2024 showing no direct financial activity, solely to meet IRS filing requirements. DMMA initially expected that it would not be required to include ITMAF's activity on its 2024 return as reported on DMMA 2023's return; however, because IRS recognition of ITMAF's exemption status took longer than anticipated, ITMAF's activity is included. ITMAF will file its own applicable Form 990 for the 2025 tax year.
Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).
CAMP AID FUND - Every week, approximately 80 unhoused individuals in Des Moines, IA (population 204,000) receive essential supplies - including portable propane heaters, propane tanks and exchanges, tents, fire extinguishers, batteries, food, water, and other household and personal items - delivered directly to their encampment sites by a dedicated team of volunteers. DSM Mutual Aid operates entirely through volunteer efforts with no paid staff. Persons Served (Unduplicated Count): 220 - a 26% increase from the 175 individuals served in 2023, and a 132% increase from the 95 individuals served in 2020, the year DSM Mutual Aid began.

All bail funds have been returned as of the filing date of this return. However, and for only the second first time in DMMA's history, a $6,000 bond was forfeited when an individual failed to appear at a 2024 court appearance for a bond originally posted in 2023. This forfeiture represents less than 2% of all bonds ever paid by DMMA. Historically, DMMA's primary focus has been posting bail for protesters arrested in Central Iowa - a priority that continues today. In recent years, DMMA has expanded its support to include incarcerated, formerly incarcerated or arrested individuals throughout Central Iowa which are not protest related. This support includes bail, commissary funds, legal and court fees, probation and fine payments, vehicle impoundment fees, and other expenses related to arrest, incarceration and court proceedings. The purpose of ITMAF is to provide financial assistance to Trans and Nonbinary individuals in Iowa as they access gender-affirming care, including travel-related expenses necessary to obtain such care. DMMA charges no administrative or fiscal sponsorship fees for this service, and all ITMAF-related income and expenses are included in DMMA's 2024 financial activity. Additional details regarding DMMA's fiscal sponsorship of ITMAF are provided in Schedule O for Part III, Line 3. Persons Benefited (Unduplicated Count) = 294 - a 147% increase from the 119 individuals served in 2023.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
96% of DSM MUTUAL AID’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (91% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2021 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $11k → $36.
2 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is
DSM MUTUAL AID leans on a few funders — its largest provides 100% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund DSM MUTUAL AID.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of DSM MUTUAL AID's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $11k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
