What Community Memorial Hospital does
Mission
To provide excellence in the delivery of healthcare.
As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.
Programs
Community Memorial Hospital (cmh) is a vital component of the southside virginia area, providing quality care to our patients, servicing as a vital part of the safety net and enhancing community health. Our mission is to provide excellence in the delivery of healthcare. We are led by a volunteer 14 member board of directors. Cmh is designated as a sole community hospital by medicare which means that we are located in a rural area and 35 miles from other hospitals. We are also designated a disproportionate share hospital by medicare which means that we provide care to a higher level of low-income individuals. Our primary service area of mecklenburg county ranks below the state average in per capita income and above the state average in estimated total population in poverty percentage. We offer a full spectrum of services to the community including in-patient acute care, post-acute, and long-term care, out-patient services, home health and hospice. Our emergency department sees patients regardless of their ability to pay. We offer financial assistance to our uninsured patients. Uninsured patients qualifying with income below the federal poverty level are offered free care. Uninsured…

We have also made the decision to operate practices in the specialty areas of cardiology/pulmonary services, ear, nose & throat services, orthopedics, pain management, surgical services, women's health services, and urology services as these are specialty services otherwise might not be available for our community without significant travel. Medical staff privileges are extended to all qualified physicians but recruiting to a rural area comes with many challenges.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $262M to $429M (+63%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 5% · 2021 5% · 2022 1%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
1% of Community Memorial Hospital’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (1% for the typical peer).

Left out of every figure on this page: $549k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Virginia Health Care Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money Community Memorial Hospital raised.
From the IRS filings of Community Memorial Hospital’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Community Memorial Hospital leans on a few funders — its largest provides 100% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Community Memorial Hospital.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2018 99% · 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
