What Colonial Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America Inc does

Mission

The pva is dedicated to improving the quality of life for veterans with paralysis due to spinal cord injury or disease and to the protection of their civil rights. Our goal is to ensure the health and well-being of our members and all paralyzed veterans through education, information and referral, medical research, and physical, psychological and recreational therapy

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Membership benefits and accessibility needs: colonial pva supports veterans with spinal cord injuries or disorders by connecting them to vital benefits, recreation and rehabilitation opportunities, and a wide range of social activities. We work closely with va caregivers and facilities to advocate for our members. The hoskins education and reemployment training (heart) program, launched in 2020, provides a 24 week paid fellowship for members, spouses, and caregivers, offering hands on experience and personalized career guidance from a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Our ms program offers weekly outreach and monthly virtual meetings for members with ms, supplemented by information from the baltimore va medical center's ms center of excellence. The women veterans program creates a supportive space for women to connect, share experiences, and advocate for equitable access to healthcare, benefits, and employment. The sports and recreation program provides a wide variety of adaptive sports and recreational opportunities-including paracycling, fishing, billiards, bowling, rugby, shooting sports, and grants to attend the national veterans wheelchair games. 2. Public affairs: advocacy in the community is a major, ongoing concern. Working with other veteran and disability groups increases public awareness of the potential of paralyzed and disabled persons in the work place and in the community. This program also includes the accessibility needs program: launched in 1985, this program is vital to the disabled community because it provides much needed aids for independent living, such as wheelchairs, prosthetic aids, ramps, wheelchair home and bathroom modifications and vehicle modifications. These items are provided to individuals with low income who cannot afford the items they desperately need. The chapter receives a grant from the state of delaware and supplements the program with gifts from private foundations to ensure that all persons with disabilities, regardless of their veteran or non-veteran status, will receive needed assistance.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 2 funders, grant income fell $14k → $6k.

3 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $1.4M from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Paralyzed Veterans of America). These are real filings, and they are not money COLONIAL CHAPTER OF THE PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA INC raised.

From the IRS filings of COLONIAL CHAPTER OF THE PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COLONIAL CHAPTER OF THE PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 82% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COLONIAL CHAPTER OF THE PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of COLONIAL CHAPTER OF THE PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $250 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Delaware, across 1 state.

NY

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $56k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
