What Chester Springs Library does
Mission
To serve the area by providing access to materials, services and programs that promote education, lifelong learning, early literacy, leisure opportunities, individual growth, and connections that build a healthy and vibrant community
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
In 2024, our programming for children, teens, families, and adults continued to be well attended and well loved. Our programs build community and align with our mission to promote education, learning, and recreation. We held 406 in-person programs attended by 8,967 people. The framework for our programs is established and consists of preschool story times three days per week, one play dough morning each week, and makinmusic for young children once a month. School age programs included bi-monthly stem classes for homeschool students. Our adult programs included a weekly crochet group and a monthly book discussion. Some of our stand-alone programs have now become staples that we repeat. People associate them with our library and look forward to them each year. Examples from 2024 included the annual bubble festival (highlighted in the 2025 pa summer reading showcase), the august fairy tale fair, the martin luther king, jr day intergenerational arts and crafts to decorate the library, thanksgiving center piece making weeklong drop in, and summer mosaics classes led by the library director.
$3,864 spent$3,400 earned by the program3% of program spendingThe library continued to partner with west pikeland township parks and recreation association to offer a summer in the parks series of family entertainment, spring and fall yoga classes at pine creek park, and a community egg hunt in the spring. We also continued to participate with historic yellow springs, inc., a cultural nonprofit, for the december annual holiday stroll, the mother's day art in the village event, and the fall anniversary of the village of historic yellow springs. In december, we purchased a movie theater style popcorn maker to add more fun and enjoyment for our library users during events like these. Our programming and our partnerships contribute to the value we offer by allowing us to reach more members of the community and share our resources with other nonprofits that serve the same people.
$1,145 spent1% of program spendingPennsylvania state library law requires at least 12% of a library's operating expenses shall be spent on collection development. Chester Springs Library continued to meet this obligation in 2024. The number of items in the library's catalog was 16,549 items. This consisted of books, magazines, dvds, music cds, audiobooks on cd, play-aways, magazines, book club kits, and a library of things (circular looms, gelli arts printing kits, and disc golf sets). We also contributed as much as possible to the library system's electronic resource collection of downloadable e-books, e-audio books, and e-magazines. Our total circulation of material (physical items and e-resources) was 66,948. Circulation of children's physical materials included in this amount was 21,948. In 2024, chester springs spent 13.24% for collection development.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2018 to 2019, from $337k to $429k (+27%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 71% · 2018 70% · 2019 74% · 2020 86% · 2021 81% · 2022 79% · 2023 75% · 2024 78%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
91% of CHESTER SPRINGS LIBRARY’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (57% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $2k → $3k.
1 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 1% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of CHESTER SPRINGS LIBRARY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
CHESTER SPRINGS LIBRARY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 42% of grant income and the top three 96%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2018 39% · 2019 40% · 2020 45% · 2021 65% · 2022 46% · 2023 54% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
CHESTER SPRINGS LIBRARY draws 66% of its grant income from funders outside Pennsylvania, across 3 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $413 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
