What Catamaran Literary Reader does
Mission
Publish a quarterly literary journal, offer educational programs to the public related to the journal, and run a poetry competition, resulting in the publishing of a book of poetry by a West Coast poet.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Program
Published and distributed 4 quarterly editions of the literary journal Catamaran. Each edition was 144 pages in length and featured the new work of 195 contributors in poetry, fiction, translation, fine art and creative nonfiction. Each edition was distributed to subscribers, libraries and bookstores nationwide, with remaining copies donated to educational institutions. We completed the Catamaran Poetry Prize for West Coast Poets, based on an open-submissions process, which resulted in our publication of one book-length manuscript of original poetry. Held 8 free public reading events online for poets and writers and 6 online educational courses related to our literary journal.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $8k to $-13696 (−275%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 8% · 2021 26% · 2022 27% · 2024 26%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
119% of CATAMARAN LITERARY READER’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $65k → $10k.
2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 89% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of CATAMARAN LITERARY READER’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
CATAMARAN LITERARY READER leans on a few funders — its largest provides 87% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
92% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CATAMARAN LITERARY READER.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 77% · 2018 83% · 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 95% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
89% of CATAMARAN LITERARY READER's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $32k that is directly attributable, 63% of it comes from funders outside California, across 3 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $255k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
