Programs
Sunday, December 15, 2024, St. Paul's Lutheran Evangelical Church in Jersey City, NJ This falls concert title, The Dance of Love, is taken from the Rumi quote Both light and shadow are the dance of love, which is the basis for our opening song, written for us by Syrian Composer Wassim Abraham in 2019. The concert explores joyful and buoyant dance imagery in Il Est Nes 7/8 dance meter, a South African game song called Nda Wana, Piazzolas Vereno Porteno tango rhythms and foot stompers from Christmas and Hanukkah traditions, such as Deck the Halls and Drey Dredelekh.

Inspired by Poor Wayfaring Stranger, our program explores emigration across centuries - the resilience, turmoil, and nostalgia of leaving home, and the metaphorical layers of love and loss in folk traditions. Featuring works like La Paloma, Donal Óg, Sea Wash, and traditional Greek pieces, the concert reflects on migration's emotional and cultural impact. Members of Cantigas will also share personal stories of emigration. We dedicate this performance to all who have journeyed into the unknown in search of a new home.
