01What it does

What Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept Inc does

Mission

To provide fire protection and rescue service in the Broad River district of Buncombe County, NC.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, Inc. (BRVFD) provides fire, rescue, and medical services to approximately 3,000 residents and all those who visit. In addition to the 32+ square miles that we cover out of three stations we also respond to an additional 5 square miles located in two other counties. We have one full time Chief, and on average two part-time firefighter / EMT positions. BRVFD also has on average 28 dedicated volunteers who respond to alarms when available, an extremely appreciated Auxiliary, and an amazing Board of Directors who are elected by our residents. Our Volunteers generally average over 3200 hours of training each year. This is time that they are away from their families and their payment is pride along with those we serve giving them a thank you. Our main goal is to find feasible ways to save lives and property through training, education, and utilizing more modern equipment. Our annual call volume has been steadily increasing from approximately 60 calls per year in 2008 to 300 in 2025.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 99% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 3 of 4 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 85% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

99% of Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $500 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside North Carolina, across 1 state.

WI

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $68k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
